How To Add Downloaded Fonts To Cricut Design Space
Tackling how to utilise draw in cricut design space forth with what the heck you can do with information technology. From using writing fonts in cricut pattern infinite to separating a file into multiple colours and addressing envelopes with cricut pens.
Alexis and I are back with another Silhouette VS Cricut video (and blog mail!) and this fourth dimension… nosotros're talking about the describe or write or sketch tool! In this series, Alexis from Persia Lou and I are comparing the Silhouette and the Cricut machines to give you insights into how they work, the design software, and the different materials that they can cut. We're not so much talking about which is improve, but the different features and what they can do.
So I'll outset off with some honesty- this isn't a feature from Cricut that I employ often. I have used it a few times in projects I've created over the by few years simply because how much I utilize my car? It's pretty rarely used. Since I love my hand lettering– I don't use it for things I retrieve that information technology'southward most used for. Like addressing an envelope, or writing someones proper noun in a beautiful script. I'd rather just practise that past paw. If you honey using the pen tool, I'd love to hear what you create with it!
In this video and blog postal service, I go through how to put together a print and cut file using a Cricut image and Cricut Writing Font, I cover how to letter of the alphabet on a surface that is not a cut file (ie. an envelope or pennant), how cut files transfer to describe files, and how to separate a file into multiple colours. Phew! It's a big listing!
If you would rather watch it in video grade… bank check it out! And while y'all're over at that place, I'd love if you subscribed :) I observe it's easier to follow the process in video merely if y'all'd rather read (I see yous, in the lunchroom at work- ha!), I've got you covered with the written post below.
What is the Cricut Depict Tool?
Cricut machines have ii clamps for tools- one for a blade style tool (Clench B) and one for a pen style tool (Clamp A). At to the lowest degree this is true for the two machines I've had (Cricut Explore and Cricut Maker)! Y'all cannot put a bract in clamp A simply similar you lot tin't put a pen in clamp B. You lot'll figure this out pretty quickly if you are creating a project that requires ii pens and it tells you to load ane at a time. Clamp A also houses their older scoring tool which is the scoring tool needed for the Cricut Explore.
The cricut depict tool uses the same mechanics of the cut that you're used to- simply with a mark. As the name would suggest, it draws instead of cuts. There's some limitations on this merely it's pretty cool if you're looking to draw some things! I could meet this being great for scrapbookers, replacing lots of stamps with the broad diverseness of designs in Cricut Design Infinite.
How to Use Cricut to Cutting AND Describe
The outset projection I wanted to demonstrate for y'all is how to use multiple tools with your Cricut. In this projection I used the fine indicate bract (the i that comes with your machine), the scoring tool (adaptive tool for the Maker), and a fine point marker. I created this trivial envelope out of carte stock. I dearest using double sided scrapbook paper for custom envelopes since you get the fancy look of an envelope liner with only 1 piece of newspaper.
This design is simply i I found in Cricut Design Space and added the writing to. I sized my text to the envelope (you tin can resize the entire envelope and text after- keeping it all in line if you need to!) and chose a script font for the text. I chat in the video a fleck more virtually writing fonts and Cricut Design Space capabilities. I'chiliad going to skip over that here and conversation most that in the next section of this post. Only for the sake of this instance- make certain to cull a writing font for your envelope. You tin can filter your search for this.
I also chose to add a stamp pattern to the envelope. I used a cut file for this and only changed the line type to describe. I talk more nearly that in some other section too only it merely changes where the car would have cut to a line that will draw.
You volition need to adhere these layers together so the writing draws ON the envelope. Cricut will automatically space all the pieces of a design out as if it'southward cutting layers out of vinyl if y'all don't 'adhere' them using the paperclip icon at the bottom of the layers console. Y'all can resize this fastened design as much as you need before you hit 'Brand it'. I also turned off the envelope liner in this design. You lot can plough on and off layers past hitting the eye icon in the layers panel.
When yous hit 'Make it', y'all can move your design around on your mat if you need. Then, y'all'll exist prompted to put in specific tools start. For this design, it told me to put in my pen and my scoring blade. When information technology was finished that portion of the projection, the machine paused and the software prompted me to put in the fine point blade. The machine never unloads to keep it all lined upwardly.
Using the Cricut Draw Function with Fonts (writing fonts)
Okay and then I said this in the video and I'll say it here… I love Cricut and the software merely the one thing I find limiting and I do find frustrating? Fonts. On the plus side, yous tin cut whatever of your ain fonts on the Cricut (woohoo!) and they accept a huge library of fonts for y'all to use in their software if yous're not a font hoarder like I am.
But… the spacing! This kills me! The machine spaces the letters so that information technology tin cutting them individually. Which, over again, is neat in theory… only then you lot'd need to place each letter of the alphabet individually on your design to get a great kerning dorsum. They do requite you the ability to adjust the spacing of your letters, only specifically with script fonts where the pb in needs to attach to the previous letter… it'southward obvious these aren't spaced out evenly, as adjusting the font spacing doesn't fully correct the issue. You can see this very obviously as I play with fonts on my envelope design.
What fonts can you use with the describe tool? Cricut has specific fonts called 'writing' fonts that are meant for the Cricut draw tool and typically are just ane line thick per alphabetic character. You can filter past them or you can select the font you love and pick the 'draw' line blazon from the drop downward bill of fare to meet what information technology translates similar as a drawn font.
How to Address Your Ain Envelope
Okay so subsequently I made my own envelope and addressed it in the terminal project, I thought it was a good time to evidence how to use the writing tool on your own surface! I have done this before in a Cricut VS Silhouette project. you can see my 'Bee Kind' Wooden Pennant I drew on Right Hither.
For this project, I used the same address template I'd fabricated in the terminal example. To edit any of the font, y'all need to detach the designs from one another (in the layer panel), edit your font or movement things around, whatsoever you need, then 'adhere' it again before cutting to keep information technology lined up.
Once you hitting make it, you can no longer size it but you tin can motion information technology around on your mat. You'll definitely want to do this to make sure information technology'south lined up on your envelope. If yous wanted to exercise lots of envelopes at one time, I'd suggest using Cricut SnapMat to make sure that they're lined upwards well. I did a whoooole video and blog post almost SnapMat Right Here.
Practise you lot demand to select the right pen and paper in Cricut Design Space?
When yous're cutting using your Cricut, cloth selection is very important. Information technology'due south what makes sure your bract volition cut through your material cleanly, and that information technology won't cut through your mat… or the backing of your material, or any you're trying to do.
When yous're using the Cricut Depict function, though? I have found it really doesn't thing… most of the time. As long every bit y'all choose one of the preloaded pens that's the aforementioned size (ish) as the 1 that yous want to use, you're good to go. The machine won't find which color y'all put in in that location ;)
You lot also can't select 'kraft envelope' so picking something similar 'cardstock' works not bad. But exist aware that similar any felt tip, using it on a super crude surface could fray the tip.
The drop downwards of pen options in Cricut Design Space also doesn't give you lot pick for the washable fabric mark Cricut makes. If you wanted to marker on fabric, I'm chatting more than most that below, but only choose a different marker and information technology should be fine.
Tin you use a Cut File for the Draw Tool
The affair is, you can do any you want with Cricut. But some things simply look nicer and are easier. Ha! So Yeah you can totally apply a Cricut cut file for describe. But information technology will just change the cut lines to draw lines. Which is often keen if yous have a layered cut file but I shared a couple examples in the video where you tin see… it'southward non that great. If you have a thinner design that looks like a describe design simply is a cutting file? You're going to double upward each of your lines.
You tin can use the 'contour' tool (bottom of the layer panel) to turn off some of those lines, just it might not end upward looking how you'd similar (as in my case). I did do this for my 'Bee Kind' Pennant though and loved the look of just the outline of the bee. Then information technology can work out… but information technology also can non. You'll accept to play with your specific blueprint to decide for yourself.
How to Separate a Cricut Design Into Unlike Colors
If yous find a design you dear in Cricut Blueprint Space (or somewhere else!), you lot can definitely dissever information technology out to cut or depict in unlike colours. This is the same procedure for a cut file that isn't already separated into layers every bit it is for a draw blueprint.
The tool you're going to want to get cozy with is the 'contour' tool, institute at the bottom of the layers console. When you have your pattern selected, click 'contour' and you tin can choose which lines to ignore… or contour. Y'all can either select the lines individually in the sidepanel to erase or click on the lines in the preview window. I chose a blueprint with the worlds most lines to demonstrate this with… JK simply really information technology has SO MANY lines. If you take this many, you might find it easier to select 'contour all' and then simply turn back on the lines you want in a sure color.
When you only accept the lines y'all desire in your showtime color turned on, hit the ten on the countour window and see the changes reflected on your canvass. Change the color of the blueprint to that first color you lot would similar it drawn in (or one that is similar, recall it doesn't have to be verbal merely information technology will hep you remember which pen to put in when). Then, re-create and paste your design and so you have ii. Line them upwardly perfectly, then hitting contour and click your contours until you take only the parts of the designs y'all'd like in your second colour and and so on. Do this until you lot accept all of your colours done! You lot tin see this being done in the video if yous like.
When you are happy with your design, select all the layers of your design and click 'attach' to make certain they all depict together. Then click 'Brand it!'. If you forget to click 'attach' y'all volition know because information technology will try to draw it on several mats. When you are making information technology, it will tell yous which pen to put in when, information technology will practise this all without unloading the design.
Using the Infusible Ink Pens + Washable Material Pen with Cricut Maker
Okay then two other types of pens that Cricut makes that I accept used (although didn't demonstrate for this video) are the Infusible Ink Pens and the Washable Fabric Pen. The Washable Fabric Pen is used with near Cricut sewing patterns you lot tin can cut with the Maker. It tin exist used to mark the pattern right onto your textile for you. You could also throw it in the Maker to write instructions on textile to have information technology done out later. I could run across this being corking for gifts. Information technology is not one of the available markers in the drop downwards carte only equally I mentioned earlier, you really don't demand to choose the exact pen yous're working with for it to work.
Infusible Ink pens are meant to be used on laser copy newspaper and then that pattern on paper be transferred to an Infusible Ink blank. I haven't written any posts on Infusible Ink YET merely it's coming! In the concurrently, my friend Cori has such great tutorials for it- check this 1 out!
And as for OTHER pens? You can definitely use not-cricut brand pens in the Cricut machines but I couldn't discover any pens I owned that fit. Notwithstanding… Jennifer Maker has a very informative video well-nigh different pens to use correct hither!
Phew! What a big postal service! I'k going to exit it at that. If y'all have whatsoever other questions near the Cricut Depict Tool, you can drib them in the comments and I'll effort to get an answer to them!
